DAKAR, SENEGAL — Senegal is facing a serious emergency after intense rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Dakar and other parts of the country, leaving several people dead or injured and causing significant damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure.

Heavy rainfall over recent hours caused water levels to rise rapidly in several areas of the Senegalese capital. Streets, homes and major roads were flooded, disrupting transportation and forcing authorities to mobilize emergency response teams.

According to available official information, exceptionally high rainfall totals were recorded in some areas. Rufisque and Ranérou received up to 142 millimeters of rain, while approximately 138 millimeters were recorded in Yoff.

DEADLY INCIDENTS IN DAKAR

One of the most tragic incidents occurred in Parcelles Assainies, Dakar, where a 25-year-old woman and her four-year-old son died after a wall collapsed during the flooding.

Another death was reported in the Matam region following the collapse of a hangar. Two other people were injured in that incident.

Authorities continue to assess affected communities, meaning the overall number of casualties and the extent of the damage could change as emergency teams complete their evaluations.

ROADS AND ESSENTIAL SERVICES DISRUPTED

The flooding has also caused major transportation problems.

Sections of Dakar's toll highway were affected by accumulated water, disrupting traffic and creating serious difficulties for thousands of people who rely on the road every day.

Healthcare facilities were also affected. Philippe Maguilène Senghor Hospital experienced flooding, prompting the transfer of some patients to ensure their safety and continued medical care.

Across Dakar, scenes from the affected areas showed heavily flooded streets, vehicles struggling through deep water and residents dealing with the consequences of the intense rainfall.

GOVERNMENT ACTIVATES EMERGENCY RESPONSE

In response to the severity of the situation, Senegalese authorities mobilized several government agencies and activated emergency measures to address the flooding.

Emergency teams are working to drain flooded areas, assist affected communities and assess damage to homes and infrastructure.

Authorities are also closely monitoring weather conditions because additional rainfall could complicate recovery operations in areas where significant amounts of water remain.

SCHOOL OPENING COULD ALSO BE AFFECTED

The flooding could also disrupt the country's education system.

Classes were scheduled to begin on October 8, but authorities are assessing conditions at schools and surrounding roads before determining whether the academic calendar can proceed normally in the hardest-hit areas.

The immediate priority remains protecting residents, assisting victims and reducing risks in communities still affected by floodwaters.

SENEGAL REMAINS ON ALERT

As emergency operations continue, many families are dealing with damaged homes, flooded neighborhoods and transportation difficulties.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly in flooded areas and near structures that may have been weakened by the water.

Senegal remains on alert as emergency teams continue working to determine the full extent of the destruction caused by the severe rainfall.

The situation remains developing, and additional official assessments are expected as authorities continue their response.
