Flávio Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami After Losing to Lula, Alleges Election Fraud Without Evidence

Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday, October 28, after leaving Brazil following his presidential election defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His departure came amid judicial restrictions connected to ongoing investigations, adding a cross-border dispute to Brazil’s tense political aftermath.

The senator traveled with his wife and two daughters through Argentina and Ecuador before reaching South Florida. Argentine migration authorities confirmed that the family crossed into the country on Tuesday night before boarding a private aircraft. The Trump administration granted the family U.S. visas, according to Associated Press reporting.

Bolsonaro’s arrival was followed by a statement alleging electoral fraud and political persecution. He initially described himself as Brazil’s rightful president-elect, then replaced that wording with a claim to be the country’s legitimate leader. He provided no evidence establishing that the election had been stolen.

Election allegations and judicial scrutiny

According to The New York Times, Bolsonaro challenged a voting-hours adjustment, but Brazilian electoral authorities said it affected too few votes to change the result. Lula’s winning margin was approximately 4.4 million votes.

Separately, Brazilian authorities had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports in connection with a money-laundering investigation. The Times reported that his travel documents were canceled after he failed to comply.

The legal distinction matters: the newspaper also reported that federal police said the travel restrictions did not automatically make Bolsonaro a fugitive or authorize his arrest. An investigation is not a criminal conviction.

An opposition movement facing new questions

Bolsonaro’s departure leaves his allies confronting how he intends to exercise political leadership from abroad. His party emerged from the election with substantial congressional strength, giving the opposition an institutional platform inside Brazil.

His presence in Florida also introduces another potential source of friction between Brasília and Washington. Bolsonaro thanked Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei in his statement.

For now, his arrival in the United States does not change Brazil’s electoral outcome. The central questions concern his compliance with judicial orders, the future leadership of his political movement, and whether his overseas allies will support further challenges to Lula’s victory.
