Helicopter Crashes in Biscayne Bay, Killing One and Injuring Two
One person died and two others were injured when a helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Key Biscayne, Florida, on Wednesday, November 4, authorities said.
The aircraft went down late in the morning near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that three people were aboard. Two survivors were transported to a trauma center for treatment.
Emergency crews from Miami-Dade, the City of Miami and Key Biscayne joined the rescue operation. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the injured adults were first taken by ground units to a designated landing zone, where an air rescue team picked them up for the flight to the hospital.
Authorities identified the aircraft as a Robinson R44 II. Preliminary information indicated that the occupants were photographing boats near the island. During an afternoon briefing, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described the two survivors as being in critical but stable condition. Officials had not immediately released the occupants’ names.
Aerial footage showed the helicopter overturned in the water, with yellow flotation devices attached to its landing skids. The images documented the position of the wreckage but did not establish what caused the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. The cause remained undetermined, and authorities had not established whether weather contributed to the accident.
