A strong earthquake shook several areas of the Dominican Republic on Sunday afternoon, particularly Greater Santo Domingo and communities in the eastern region, prompting many people to leave buildings and establishments as a precaution.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 5:49 p.m. local time and had a preliminary magnitude of 5.2. The epicenter was located near Ramón Santana, in San Pedro de Macorís province.
THE EARTHQUAKE WAS FELT IN SANTO DOMINGO
The shaking was felt in different areas of Santo Domingo and other parts of the country. Some people inside buildings and commercial establishments decided to move outdoors while the shaking continued.
A temporary evacuation of people at the Plaza de la Cultura was also reported as a precautionary measure.
According to the initial reports, there were no reports of deaths or significant material damage related to the earthquake.
A SUNDAY WITH SEVERAL SEISMIC MOVEMENTS
The strong afternoon earthquake occurred several hours after another earthquake was recorded in the morning.
The first event occurred at approximately 6:06 a.m., with an initially reported magnitude between 4.1 and 4.3. Its epicenter was located in the San Antonio de Guerra area, in Santo Domingo province.
The occurrence of both earthquakes on the same day left many people alert to the possibility of additional movements.
RECOMMENDATIONS IN CASE OF AN EARTHQUAKE
During an earthquake, people are advised to remain calm, stay away from windows and objects that could fall, and take shelter in a safe location until the shaking stops.
If outdoors, it is important to stay away from buildings, utility poles, electrical wires, and other structures that could pose a danger.
Residents remain attentive to updates from the relevant authorities regarding seismic activity in the country.
