Nine people aboard a private jet died after the aircraft crashed near a busy roadway in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, as reported by The Associated Press.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Learjet 60 traveling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The crash occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m.

The aircraft came down near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, in the Greenacres area. Witness videos showed a large fireball followed by thick smoke, with debris and broken pavement scattered across the roadway.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and authorities closed Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue urged drivers to avoid the area while responders worked.

Although officials confirmed the deaths of all nine people aboard, it was not immediately clear whether anyone on the ground had been injured. The identities of those aboard had not been released in the reports available at the time of writing.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with assistance from the FAA.

Investigators will examine the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s descent and impact. No confirmed explanation for the crash has been announced.

This is a developing story. Details may change as authorities release additional information.

Sources: Associated Press, WPTV and CBS12, citing federal aviation officials and local emergency authorities.
