🇪🇷 Eritrean troops reported inside 🇪🇹 Ethipia, as tensions raise fears of wider regional war.

Tensions in the Horn of Africa have reached a dangerous new level after Eritrean troops were reportedly seen inside Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, raising concerns that the renewed conflict in Ethiopia could expand into a wider confrontation involving neighboring countries.

Residents of Adigrat, a town located roughly 25 kilometers south of the Eritrean border, reported seeing trucks carrying dozens of soldiers they identified as members of the Eritrean military moving through the area on Wednesday.

The reports come only days after Ethiopia and Eritrea severed diplomatic relations amid growing accusations and military tensions between the two neighboring countries.

Eritrea has denied that its troops are operating in Adigrat. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel rejected the allegations and accused Ethiopia of attempting to create a justification for aggression against Eritrea.

However, reports from the conflict-monitoring organization ACLED indicated that Eritrean forces crossed the border through the Zalambessa area and moved toward the Adigrat–Idaga Hamus route. Ethiopian military drones were also reported to have targeted Eritrean forces traveling in vehicles in the area.

FIGHTING RETURNS TO TIGRAY

The latest developments come amid a major resurgence of fighting in northern Ethiopia.

Hostilities intensified on September 23 between Ethiopian federal forces and an armed alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), producing the most serious escalation in the region since the devastating 2020–2022 war.

Federal forces and their allies have since advanced across parts of Tigray and regained control of Mekelle, the regional capital, after Tigrayan forces withdrew from the city.

Despite the takeover of Mekelle, fighting has continued elsewhere in northern Ethiopia. Airstrikes, drone attacks and artillery exchanges have been reported in several locations, with civilian casualties also reported.

FEARS OF A REGIONAL CONFLICT

The reported presence of Eritrean forces inside Ethiopia adds another dangerous dimension to the crisis.

Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting forces fighting against the federal government, allegations Eritrea denies. The deteriorating relationship between Addis Ababa and Asmara has already resulted in the collapse of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The situation is particularly sensitive because Ethiopia and Eritrea have a long history of conflict. They fought a bloody border war between 1998 and 2000 before eventually restoring diplomatic relations in 2018.

Eritrean forces later fought alongside Ethiopian federal troops during the 2020–2022 Tigray war.

Relations between the two governments subsequently deteriorated again.

Another source of tension is Ethiopia’s longstanding concern over direct access to the Red Sea. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly described sea access as important to Ethiopia’s economic development, while maintaining that his government intends to pursue it peacefully.

Eritrea, meanwhile, has expressed concern over Ethiopia’s intentions regarding its territory and ports.

CIVILIANS AGAIN FACE UNCERTAINTY

The renewed violence has brought fresh uncertainty to communities that endured enormous suffering during the previous Tigray war.

Residents across northern Ethiopia are again facing military operations, displacement risks, interruptions to basic services and fears that the fighting could spread further.

The reported movement of Eritrean troops into Tigray is therefore being closely watched across the region.

What began as renewed internal fighting in northern Ethiopia now carries the risk of developing into a broader confrontation between states in an already unstable part of Africa.

The coming days could prove critical as Ethiopia, Eritrea and the armed groups operating in Tigray determine whether the current escalation continues or diplomatic efforts succeed in preventing another major regional war.
