Ukraine suffered one of the deadliest aerial attacks in recent months on Wednesday as waves of Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv and several other regions, killing at least 28 people and injuring around 100, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The heaviest loss of life was reported in Pryluky, in the northern Chernihiv region, where a missile struck a five-story residential building. Large sections of the building collapsed, leaving residents trapped beneath concrete and debris.

Ukrainian authorities said 20 people were killed in Pryluky, including five children. Around 55 people were injured in the city, while emergency crews continued searching through the ruins. Rescuers managed to bring 15 survivors out of the damaged building.

Casualties were also reported in Kyiv, Oleksandria and Kremenchuk as the large-scale assault spread across several parts of the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 70 missiles, many of them ballistic, as well as dozens of attack drones during the overnight assault. Residents of Kyiv spent part of the night sheltering in underground metro stations as explosions were heard across the capital.

The attacks also damaged industrial facilities and energy infrastructure, increasing concerns about Ukraine's power system as colder weather approaches.

Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed carrying out what it described as a massive strike. Moscow said its forces targeted military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions using precision weapons and drones.

Russian authorities said the targets included facilities connected to the production and storage of Ukrainian missiles and drones. Ukrainian authorities, however, reported significant damage to residential areas and civilian casualties.

Ukraine's air force said it intercepted more than 80 percent of 46 jet-powered drones launched by Russia, although ballistic missiles remain particularly difficult for Ukrainian defenses to stop.

Emergency operations continued Wednesday evening in the areas most heavily affected by the strikes.

The latest attack comes as aerial warfare between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify, with both countries carrying out long-range strikes against military, industrial and energy targets.
