KYIV, UKRAINE. — Germany announced a new support package worth more than €1.3 billion for Ukraine on Sunday during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to Kyiv, as Russian attacks continue to intensify across parts of Ukrainian territory.

The announcement was made jointly by Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting in the Ukrainian capital. The package combines immediate military assistance with support aimed at protecting and repairing Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season.

💶 MORE THAN €1 BILLION FOR DEFENSE

Approximately €1 billion of the package will be allocated to military assistance.

The aid includes systems and technologies designed to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses, as well as combat drones, long-range capabilities and satellite technology.

One of the main objectives is to increase Ukraine's ability to detect and respond to aerial attacks, particularly as Russia continues to make greater use of high-speed drones.

Germany also announced support for the production of new interceptor systems specifically designed to counter jet-powered drones used by Russia.

Zelenskyy emphasized that air defense remains one of Ukraine's most urgent needs because of the continuing attacks against cities and critical infrastructure.

⚡ €350 MILLION FOR THE ENERGY SECTOR

Another €350 million will be directed toward Ukraine's energy sector.

The funds will help provide generators, repair electrical substations and restore facilities damaged by attacks.

The assistance is particularly important as winter approaches, when millions of people will depend on an electricity and heating system that has already suffered extensive damage during the conflict.

The German government considers strengthening Ukraine's energy system essential to reducing the impact of possible new attacks during the coming months.

🇩🇪 MERZ REAFFIRMS GERMANY'S SUPPORT

During his visit, Friedrich Merz said Germany would continue supporting Ukraine as the war continues.

The German chancellor said that Berlin's support is not only about defending Ukraine's territorial integrity, but also about what Germany considers a fundamental issue for European security.

Merz's visit came as Kyiv faced new attacks and explosions. His trip also served as a demonstration that Germany remains committed to supporting Ukraine despite rising tensions and continued attacks against strategic infrastructure.

🤝 AGREEMENTS WORTH MORE THAN €8.5 BILLION

In addition to the €1.3 billion aid package, Ukraine and Germany announced 15 agreements and cooperation documents with a combined value exceeding €8.5 billion.

The agreements cover areas including security, weapons production, procurement, industry and joint projects inside Ukraine.

The two countries also agreed to expand cooperation in combating drones used during Russian attacks.

The partnership is intended not only to provide immediate assistance but also to develop Ukraine's long-term production and industrial capabilities.

🏭 GREATER DEFENSE COOPERATION

The German delegation accompanying Merz included representatives from major industrial sectors, particularly defense and energy.

The objective is to promote joint projects that could allow Ukraine to increase its ability to manufacture certain defense systems and reduce its dependence on foreign supplies.

This cooperation could become increasingly important as the war continues and Ukraine's military needs grow.

🏙️ A VISIT MARKED BY ATTACKS

During his stay in Kyiv, Merz and Zelenskyy also visited areas affected by recent attacks.

The Ukrainian capital has faced new strikes against infrastructure, while authorities continue working to maintain essential services.

One attack reported on Sunday targeted Kyiv's Northern Bridge, causing injuries and damage to the structure and infrastructure systems in the area.

The situation once again highlighted the risks faced by civilians and Ukrainian authorities as the war continues.

🕊️ DIPLOMACY AND THE POSSIBILITY OF PEACE

Despite the increase in military assistance, Zelenskyy and Merz also stressed the importance of diplomacy eventually leading to a solution to the conflict.

Ukraine continues to call for greater international pressure on Moscow, while diplomatic efforts to reach a negotiated settlement remain difficult.

The war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, continues to have profound consequences for civilians, the European economy and international security.

Germany's new commitment represents one of Europe's most significant recent efforts to strengthen Ukraine's defensive and energy capabilities.

With winter approaching, Kyiv is preparing to face new challenges both on the battlefield and in maintaining electricity and heating supplies.
