Ukraine experienced another intense wave of aerial attacks on Monday, September 28, after a new barrage of drones struck several areas across the country, causing deaths, dozens of injuries, and damage to residential buildings, commercial facilities, and other infrastructure.

One of the most serious attacks occurred in central Kyiv, where a drone struck a building belonging to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, causing a major fire. DEATHS AND INJURIES IN KYIV

Authorities in Kyiv initially reported one death and several injuries following attacks in the central part of the capital. Later reports raised the number of people injured in different attacks across the city to 19, with several victims transported to medical facilities.

Images from the scene showed smoke and flames coming from the National Academy of Sciences building. Some people were forced to escape through windows while rescue teams worked to bring the fire under control.

Later reports indicated that parts of the building had been seriously damaged and that workers at the institution were among those affected. Because rescue operations were still underway, the number of casualties could change during the day.

OTHER AREAS HIT

The attacks were not limited to the scientific institution. Ukrainian authorities reported strikes against several locations in Kyiv, including a pharmaceutical company, fuel stations, and other structures.

The attacks also affected other cities. In Dnipro, a drone strike on a business center killed three people and injured numerous others, according to local authorities.

In Kharkiv, an attack on a nine-story residential building left dozens of people injured, including several children. Local authorities said some of the children required medical treatment.

Attacks and damage were also reported in other regions of the country, putting additional pressure on emergency services and air-defense systems.

A DAY OF INTENSE ATTACKS

Monday's attacks came after a series of strikes reported over the previous several days. Ukrainian authorities have said that Russia is increasingly using drones with greater speed and flight capabilities to target cities and various types of infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would respond to the attacks and specifically addressed the strike on the National Academy of Sciences and other locations hit during the day.

Russia, meanwhile, maintains that its forces target facilities connected to Ukraine's military and strategic capabilities, while Ukrainian authorities accuse Russian forces of striking urban areas and civilian infrastructure.

Emergency crews continued working at several affected locations while authorities assessed the damage and updated the casualty figures.
